Bill Rebholz is an illustrator based out of Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in an industrial neighborhood in Madison, Wisconsin, where he spent time lurking around, developing an interest in drawing on other peoples things. Eventually focusing this knack, he attended the Minneapolis college of Art and Design for illustration. While in school Bill taught himself the craft of sign painting, which he wound up working as post graduation. He now finds himself doing a healthy balance of illustration work and general display painting.
Bill’s perspective is tangential, projecting feelings of dissociation, order and abstraction. The vernacular of sign painting plays a significant role in the techniques and process, but also the shape of his work. He uses idiosyncratic color blocking and line to depict people and things, making them into symbols or letterforms, pulled from the world surrounding. The commonality of subject and simplistic style draws on the influence of folk art and Bill’s intent to make artwork for everyone.
